About Lumpost

Why I started this newsletter

My mother is 72. She is sharp, curious, and reads voraciously. She retired as a nurse, raised three children, and has been online since the early 2000s. She is not afraid of technology. She just does not have anyone in her life who takes the time to explain it clearly.

A few years ago, she asked me what ChatGPT was. I tried to explain it the way I usually explain technology things — quickly, with assumptions about what she already knew. I could see her eyes glaze over. Not because she was confused. Because I was being a bad teacher.

I slowed down. I started over. I used an analogy. I avoided acronyms. I checked in. And by the end of our conversation, she was laughing and saying she wanted to try it. That conversation stayed with me.

There is no shortage of technology content in the world. But almost none of it is written for someone like my mother — a smart, curious person who just does not speak the language yet. Most tech content assumes you already know what a browser extension is. Or what “the cloud” means. Or why you should care about your privacy settings.

Lumpost exists to close that gap. One well-written email, every Tuesday. Plain English. Genuine warmth. No condescension, no jargon, no agenda. Just a clear explanation of one useful thing, every week, that you can actually use.

Editorial principles

Lumpost is reader-funded. No advertisers. No sponsors. No agenda.

  • No ads. No affiliate links. Ever. Lumpost is funded entirely by reader subscriptions — nothing else. If I recommend a tool or product, it is because I genuinely think it is useful. Not because I earn a commission.
  • Reader first. Every editorial decision is made by asking: does this help the reader? If the answer is no, it does not go in.
  • Plain language. Every technical term is explained the first time it appears. Sentences are short. The goal is clarity, not cleverness.
  • No financial, medical, or legal advice. I am a writer and technologist, not a doctor, lawyer, or financial planner. Lumpost covers technology topics only.

Get in touch

I read every email and try to respond personally within two business days. If you have a question about technology, a topic suggestion, or just want to say hello — I genuinely want to hear from you.
